Canyoning is a mountain activity that has been developed from the necessity to surpass natural obstacles in canyons and rivers. Many of the used techniques nowadays had been created by the explorer Edouard Alfred Martel, considered the father of canyoning. The first competitions of this sport took place in the end of the 70's and, since then, this practice has gained even more adepts.
Madeira’s subtropical climate and a landscape carved out by volcanoes in centuries past make it a top destination for canyoning. The scenery is stunning and canyoning is an exhilarating way to discover normally inaccessible parts of the Laurel Forest of the island. All the Madeira Laurel Forest is completely included within the boundaries of the Madeira Natural Park . Since 1992 it is declared as a European Council Biogenetic Reserve, and it is also part of the Natural World Heritage List of UNESCO since 1999.
The island of Madeira has several water courses ready for the practice of this sport as for example Ribeiro Frio and Ribeira das Cales. The inexperienced persons will be able to contact qualified guides to try this activity.
We also organize Canyoning tours. Please check it by " Activities".
