High up in the hills of Madeira, surrounded by vineyards and with the sparkling sea beyond, lies a jewel, untouched by modern development.

Qtª das Vinhas is situated in Estreito da Calheta, between the picturesque villages of Calheta and Jardim do Mar, on the sunny South-West coast of the island. Dating from the 17th century, the main house of Quinta das Vinhas (now the Hotel part) is set in a large vineyard with views towards the sea and hills. Quinta das Vinhas was turned into a small country hotel in 1997. It used to be a residential summer house for the present family owners. The main house has been carefully restored to sacrifice none of its original rustic charm. It provides 6 bedrooms, dining, living, reading rooms and a swimmingpool.

Antique furniture, flagstone and polished wooden floors, and “Azulejos” (hand-painted blue and white tiles), create a special portuguese atmosphere in this small holiday accomodation.

The oak courtyard is a good place to play boules while having an evening drink.

The upper floor of the house remains much as it always has.

Guests can enjoy playing cards or board games in the sitting room. The fireplace is perfect on chilly winter evenings.

The chapel is now the reading room, where guests can hideaway and appreciate a glass of Madeira.

The house provides 6 double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, with bath and shower. The 3 bedrooms on the lower floor open straight onto a long terrace facing the garden and the swimming pool. The 3 bedrooms on the upper floor boast lovely views over the vineyard and to the sea beyond. All bedrooms (each differently divided and decorated) have been equipped with direct dial telephone, cable TV, hair dryer and safe.

Quinta das Vinhas has also a nice swimmingpool with wonderfull sea view.

Quinta das Vinhas has a strong commitment to preserving the islands heritage whilst upholding a strong environmental policy:

• All hot water for the cottages is solar heated;
• All cleaning products are environmentally friendly;
• In the renovation and building preference is given to natural materials so as to provide greater comfort;
• The new buildings were designed so as to need only minimal heating and no air conditioning (thick walls and heavy roof insulation provide stable indoor temperature).
